The studio itself was just an idea back in 1985 when I decided, while in the basement of a former residence, that I'd like to have a studio one day. Something simple to capture song ideas. Perhaps to help a friend record a simple demo. Nothing happened then, other than to file the notion away on the dust heap of other oft neglected ideas. Some ideas are destined to rise from such obscurity, though…
Ten years later, and a divorce removed from the initial idea of having a 'studio', I traded a guitar for a Tascam rack-mounted 4-track cassette recorder, replete with VU meters. I augmented it with a couple pieces of outboard gear, and my nascent, little studio was “up and running”. I moved to digital with ADAT recorders a couple of years later, having acquired more (and better) outboard gear and some good mics. I didn't have room to record ensembles much where I lived in town at the time, so I made way to go out and record on location. I could mix at home in my treated room well enough. But I longed for a larger, more proper facility. Fast forward to 2001 and I began building a place with the studio as the main priority. I had to have a place to live, too, and both came together nicely—even though it took two years from ground-breaking to occupancy.
Since then, the studio has grown in its reach and in its appointments. After nearly thirty years my dream of a well-appointed studio has come fully realized—one thing remains: I'd like to help more people bring their ideas from within to without… to see their creative ideas become a reality. It's one of the main reasons I built the studio. Sure, I use it for my own musical and creative purposes, but working with others is the balm for a particular creative itch that I can't scratch alone. I do enjoy collaboration!
